Daniel O'Connor
Zaftig's Gets a Makeover Courtesy of Danny O
BROOKLINE - Zaftig's Delicatessen, a well-loved fixture of Brookline's culinary scene since1988, is hailed for its non-traditional, "new-Jewish" style cuisine. Now the restaurant is adding something equally innovative to enhance the atmosphere - the work of artist Daniel "Danny O" O'Connor.

Beginning on February 23rd, forty three of Danny O's framed original works will be mounted at the hip downtown eatery in a semi-permanent exhibit. At the same time, Zaftig's will unveil new menus featuring whimsical snippets of the artist's work. Colorful ice cream cones, playful sea life, and even pedal cars are just some of the lively images that will grace the menus. And, don't forget Zaftig's own, "Nanny Fanny" - she too has been given a collage makeover.

As with Zaftig's cuisine, Danny O's work is anything but typical. Vintage album covers serve as the canvas for his unique collage art, which he creates using recycled magazine and newspaper clippings, as well as Scotch Tape. His vibrant and imaginative take on everyday scenes is what makes his work stand out. In fact, Bostonians may recognize some of his pieces in and around the Boston metro area, including his show at the Prudential Skywalk, works on display at Logan Airport, and on the walls of the New Beacon Hill Whole Foods Market.

A native of Lexington, MA, the artist's work isn't completely new to Zaftig's walls. In 1998 Danny O created several large scale paintings to dress up the classy yet simple decor and Zaftig's owner, Robert Shuman, and his customers loved them - so much so that Shuman continued to add to his collection and Danny O was frequently commissioned by patrons.

All of the work on exhibit at Zaftig's will be for sale and the prices range from $750-4300. In a neighborhood that appreciates good food, books, film, and art, Zaftig's offers the perfect combination for those looking for a more sophisticated dining experience.
